Fisherman stabbed to death by colleague for “smoking cocaine”

Angry that his fishing colleague would not stop smoking cocaine in his presence, a 45-year-old fisherman of Rose Hall, grabbed a knife and repeatedly stabbed the colleague to the chest.

The dead fisherman has been identified as 38-year-old, Davanand Jailall of Agriculture Road, East Coast Demerara.

The name of his assailant has not been released.

According to the Police, the incident took place this morning at the #65 village koker, Corentyne.

The two men were reportedly in the company of other fishermen working on the boat, when Jailall was noticed smoking, what his colleagues were convinced, was cocaine.

One of the other fishermen told investigators that Jailall was repeatedly asked by the other fisherman to “stop smoking cocaine’ on the boat, but he continuously refused and carried on smoking while cooking.

As Jailall continued to refuse to leave the boat or stop smoking, the colleague got angry and armed himself with a knife and attacked Jailall, repeatedly stabbing him to the upper body.

The man collapsed immediately and died. The suspect immediately dropped the knife and ran from the boat, but has since been arrested.

Investigators said the murder victim’s body bore ten stab wounds, including one to his neck and another to the left side of his face.

Murder charges are to be laid shortly in the matter.
