Five non-violent women prisoners receive Presidential Pardon

Five women who have completed part of their prison sentence for non-violent offenses, will be allowed to go home for the holidays.

The Ministry of Public Security today announced that President David Granger has signed off and granted the Presidential pardon to 34-year-old, Shabana Asgar; 24-year-old, Shellon David; 27-year-old Ronella Junor; 27-year-old, Maxine Baird Sampson and 54-year-old, Reina Vargas.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, the women prisoners “have each served a portion of their respective sentences for offences ranging from larceny, fraud and giving false oath.”

The pardons will take effect on Christmas day.

Since taking office in 2015, President Granger has been offering pardons to non-violent women and youths who find themselves behind bars.

Once freed, many of them would participate in programmes that allow them to easily reintegrate back into society and also prepare them for the world of work.
