Free online Spanish courses for public servants from March

Outgoing Minister of Public Service, Sonia Parag today announced that the Government will be partnering with the US based online course provider, Coursea, to provide spanish classes to workers in the Public Service.

Addressing reporters at her Waterloo Office this afternoon, Minister Parag said the online Spanish programme will target all persons within the Public Service. There are more than 54,000 workers in the Public Service.

“We are looking to train all public servants, we are looking to train all of the sectors, all of the ministries in central government would be able to customized a training that is relevant to their ministry and Coursera will take that over. So, in 2024, the Ministry of Public Service’s mandate through Coursera would be to train all public servants in Spanish,” Minister Parag said.

She clarified, however, that the programme, which is scheduled to begin in March, will not be mandatory for the public servants. However, the Minister expressed the hope that public servants will capitalise on the programme.

“It is not mandatory but I mean, we encourage persons to be able to do it but it is not mandatory,” she clarified.

The Spanish programme will run for approximately 16 months. Ahead of its commencement, public servants will be given the opportunity to apply for various courses under the programme.

Last September, the Education Ministry began the roll out of a Spanish programme in all public schools in keeping with an announcement by President Irfaan Ali that the Spanish Language is now a compulsory subject in public schools.
