Government allocates $204.1 Billion for enhancement of road and bridge networks in Guyana

A sum of $204.1 billion has been allocated in this year’s budget to enhance road and bridge networks across the country, including a $4.2B injection into the Four-Lane Bridge at Wismar, $19.7B to advance works on the new Demerara Harbour bridge crossing and $10B for the first phase upgrades to the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.

The budget for upgrades to road and bridge networks last year was $136.1B.

During his budget presentation, the Finance Minister said this year’s allocation will also see significant upgrades to community roads and streets in every village across the country.

“Mr. Speaker in 2023 we spent $60.7B on community roads, in 2024, we have budgeted a further sum of $73.2B for community roads. And this will see hundreds of community roads rehabilitated in each regions, totaling thousands along the length and breadth of coastal Guyana,” the Minister noted.

Further, the Minister said investments will also continue on hinterlands roads to the tune of $5.5B.

It was explained that due to the upgrades being done on the country’s road networks, the question of road safety is now high on the agenda.

The Government plans to implement a robust road safety and traffic management plan, which includes the implementation of information technology solutions to manage traffic including the development of a new radar system and new supportive laws and regulations.
