Sixteen thousand residents in Wales and neighbouring communities along the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara will now receive potable water with the commissioning of the $1.35B Wales Water Treatment Plant.
Constructed by Hipro Ecologicos in partnership with S. Jagmohan Construction, the plant is designed to treat 8 million liters of water per day. It is being supported by three wells.
Addressing hundreds of residents at the commissioning ceremony on Sunday, President Irfaan Ali said the completion of the Wales Water Treatment Plant brings the country closer to achieving its goal of delivering treated water right across the country.
“My friends, the story of development is before you. Today, in a tasteless way you will taste it, because water has no taste. Today, in a tasteless way you will taste another form of development. By the end of this year, 90% of the population will taste the tasteless nature of water through treated water all across this country,” the President assured.

Through the project, the Government has invested $400,000 in every household.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal said the commissioning ceremony is testament to Government’s commitment to the development of the country, and the supply of potable water to the citizens, regardless of their location.
“Access to treated water is a universal right for everyone, it is no longer a privilege for just a few. This is why ladies and gentlemen, this is why, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government since its return to Office has consistently made bold decisions and investment to modernize and expand the water sector,” Minister Croal said.
The Minister said he knows residents and businesses will welcome the development int he Wales community.

“This state-of-the-art water treatment plant will not only provide cleaner water, but it will also enhance public health, reduce water borne disease and improve the overall quality of life for families, for those who are attending school and for businesses here in this region,” Minister Croal said.
He also said the commissioning of the plant forms part of Government’s vision to modernize the delivery of safe water across the country. He added that the Government is aggressively expanding the national water infrastructure, through the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), increasing access in both urban and rural communities as Wales.
