6.3 tonnes of cocaine found on Guyana registered vessel in West Africa

Four Guyanese nationals are among six persons arrested off the West African Coast after 6.3 tonnes of cocaine was found in a Guyana registered vessel that was in the area.

In a statement this afternoon, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that French authorities boarded the vessel after seeking permission from the Guyanese authorities on Saturday as it traversed the West African coast.

In the vessel, the French authorities discovered 6.3 tonnes of cocaine packed in bales.

The four Guyanese were arrested along with a Colombian national and a Dominican.

The Head of CANU said the bust off the coast in West Africa is a result of the agency’s ongoing international collaboration with a number of other countries.

The Government of Guyana today said it reaffirms its commitment to strengthening international cooperation in the fight against transnational organized crime, particularly narcotics trafficking.

Earlier this week, authorities in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago also announced the seizure of a large quantity of cocaine on board a vessel that had traveled there from Guyana and was heading to St. Maarten. The vessel was reportedly in Trinidad and Tobago for almost two weeks before the bust was made.
