Govt. and Police starve Argentine Forensic expert of information and documents on Berbice teen murders

The Argentine Forensic Expert who was brought to Guyana by the Guyana Human Rights Authority to assist in the probe of the Berbice teen murders will be leaving Guyana tomorrow and is still to receive any technical information on the Police investigation.

Forensic Expert, Dr. Luis Fondebrider who visited the scenes where the bodies were found over the weekend, made several requests of the Guyana Police Force.

The Police Force did not meet any of his requests for information and copies of material from the probe. He was also denied a meeting with the local investigators.

This evening, the Head of the Guyana Human Rights Association, Mike McCormack expressed disappointment with the lack of a positive response to the requests of the forensic expert.

“It is disappointing because one would have hoped that this is the sense of support that the Police initially required or ask for because this was not first a GHRA initiative…so its disappointing that it is not moving forward the way that we had hoped, we will still look at it but I think we have to acknowledge that it has not been a success”, the GHRA Head said.

Mr. McCormack explained that the visiting expert met today with the Home Affairs Minister and a team of advisors. He said that meeting appeared to be more of a diplomatic encounter than an information-sharing session since it did not yield any technical information that could assist Dr. Fondebrider and his probe.

The forensic expert, Dr. Luis Fondebrider said his visit was just a preliminary one and he needs documents and more information from the crime scenes to assist the probe. He said while the meetings with the family members and other persons went well, the information and documents are needed.

“The ball is now in the state’s Court”, the expert said.

The Police Force has been leading the investigations into the matter. But more than three months since the gruesome murders, the case remains unsolved with no major breakthrough.

The Human Rights body has been pressing the government to bring in the Argentine experts but the administration refused, instead relying on the investigative work of the Police Force and a visit from the Regional Security Service which did not yield any results.

Three days later, Haresh Singh was found murdered in the #3 village Backdam.
