Group of Cubans and Haitians charged for illegal entry; Ordered deported

Twelve Cubans and three Haitians were today ordered deported after pleading guilty to illegally entering Guyana.

The 15 foreigners stood before Magistrate Alex Moore via skype and opted not to waste the Court’s time, deciding to plead guilty to the charge.

They were all fined $20,000 each and ordered deported back to their homeland.

Those charged were Haitian Nationals Ilio Joseph, Rosenick Balthazar, Miki Love Livil alongside Cuban Nationals; Deriel Acosta, Dariel Grillo, Elayne Gonzalez, Mirtha Lazo, Elizabeth Reyes, Claudia Cluz, Ariadne Rodrigues, Jorge Eintion, Jorge Voga, Diacle Suarez, Gustaou Cala, and Alexandra Alarion

When the matter was called today, it was revealed that the fifteen foreigners entered Guyana through an illegal crossing from Suriname at Springlands in Berbice.

They were nabbed several days later in a bus heading to the town of Lethem which borders Brazil.

Police checks revealed that the group never presented themselves to immigration. They told the Police that they were on their way to Brazil to seek refugee status.

They reportedly met a Guyanese man in Berbice who offered to get them to Brazil at a cost of US$2000 for the group, but they were only brought to Georgetown and were forced to find their own way to Lethem.

The 15 foreign nationals will remain in custody until their deportations.
