Guyana re-imposes COVID-19 test requirement on travelers from China

With China relaxing its COVID-19 measures and allowing its citizens to travel more freely even as COVID-19 cases in the country are on the rise, the Government of Guyana has made a decision to require all travelers from China from the age of two years, to present a negative COVID-19 test result.

In the directive, the Ministry of Health said the COVID test should be taken within 48-hrs of travel to Guyana and the requirement has been put in place for all persons traveling from China and the special regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The requirement covers both direct travel and third country transit travel to Guyana.

The Ministry of Health said airlines must confirm the negative COVID-19 test result for the travelers from China before allowing them to board flights to Guyana.

The Ministry said it believes the move will result in a slowdown of the spread of COVID-19.

Guyana removed all COVID-19 test and vaccination requirements for travelers to Guyana several months ago.

The decision to require travelers from China to present the COVID-19 negative test results before travel, follows the lead of the United States which imposed similar requirements last week following the decision of China to relax its COVID-19 measures.

China was the first country to report the COVID-19 virus more than three years ago. Since then, the virus has claimed the lives of more than 6.7 million people across the world.
