Guyana registers official protest with Venezuela over recent attacks on GDF soldiers in Cuyuni

The Guyana Government has registered its protest with Venezuela over the latest attack on Guyanese soldiers by gunmen on the Venezuela side of the border in the Cuyuni River. The attacks took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Guyana Defence Force reported that none of the soldiers suffered any injuries.

The GDF soldiers were conducting routine patrols between Eterinbang and Makapa in the Cuyuni River when they came under fire.

In a statement today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has communicated Guyana’s condemnation on the latest attack to Caracas.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana via diplomatic communication to the Ministry of People’s Power for Foreign Relations of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, has registered its condemnation of these attacks and requested that a thorough investigation be carried out by the Government of Venezuela and the perpetrators be apprehended and brought to justice,” the Ministry said.

The Foreign Ministry also recalled a similar incident which took place earlier this year, and noted that immediately after that incident, Guyana requested Venezuela to take action to prevent further attacks on Guyana Defence Force soldiers from the Venezuelan territory and to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators.

The Ministry said it intends to bring the latest attacks to the attention of the international community, as was done earlier this year.

It said it will continue to monitor the situation with other responsible Government ministries and take appropriate action where necessary.
