Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken has warned his Sergeants not to accept bribes and he made it clear that more persons should face charges for offering bribes to the Police.
Addressing the opening of the 2026 Police Sergeant’s Conference this morning, Commissioner Hicken described Sergeants as ambassadors of the Guyana Police Force, who must all times strive to uphold the value of the Force.
He reinforced that there is no place for corruption in the Police Force.
“If you become corrupt is because there is a giver and you are the receiver, as of today stop receiving and persons must be charged when they come to bribe the police, I am making myself very clear or else other things will happen,” Hicken warned.

Mr. Hicken said while the Guyana Police Force continues to make positive strides, much more has to be done to ensure compliance even by Peace Officers.
He said the implementation of the Tint regulation from the end of this month will be another test for Sergeants, who he urged to get in line.
The ultimate goal, he said, is to ensure that the Police Force and its ranks adapt to the new form of policing being implemented by the force.
“As expectations of the Guyana Police Force increase, modern policing will not define as equipment alone but by supervision, accountability, discipline and daily leadership begin with you the sagggetns. At the Inspectors conference I stated that inspectors translate strategy into structure and supervision, you the sergeants translate that supervision into action, you are the frontline leaders of this noble organization,” Hicken told the sergeants.
Mr. Hicken also urged sergeants to ensure that their body cameras and taser guns are in their possession at all times, in line with the Standard Operating Procedures.

Further, he said there will be anew reporting system for the police force to ensure accurate reporting of crime.
“Within the next two months, we will be taking reports via computer and it will go right through the system, there will be no more papers, those are gone days. You must ensure that patrols are conducted professionally and disciplined is maintained consistently.
The Police Commissioner has mandated that at stations where Sergeants are in charge, there must be a Community Policing desk. He noted that future promotions will only be done on merit once ranks are properly evaluated.
