The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), will over the next two days allocate more than 1,600 house lots in Chateau Margot, Felicity, Success and Le Ressouvenir on the East Coast of Demerara as it tries to address an ongoing backlog in allocations.
Speaking at the Ministry’s Dream Realized event today the Aurthur Chung Conference centre, Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Susan Rodrigues, said the persons who will be allocated lots over the next two days are persons who submitted applications prior to 2019.
“So, it is people who have been waiting for sometime and it is keeping with our commitment in reducing the backlog in the system. Region four is our largest region and represents our highest demand that we have, we have about 48,000 pending applicants in region four even though we have already made over 41,000 allocations within the last five years,” Minister Rodrigues noted.
The Minister said works have also been ongoing to clear the application backlog in other regions. She said works are ongoing in the smaller regions as new areas are being opened up.
She said the Ministry is now faced with a new challenge since its allocation target for this year has been increased from 10,000 to 25,000.
“So, we see the housing sector and the housing programme as a great equalizing factor and a vehicle through which we can create generational wealth, anybody who has become wealthy anywhere in the world, owns real estate, because the assets only appreciate overtime,” the Minister told the allottees.
Meanwhile, Housing Minister Collin Croal said works have been continuing on land development to pave the way for allottees to begin their home construction.
He said in some areas, the volume of work to be done is large as new housing schemes are being developed.
“Since we are in office, 86 new housing areas were developed in which, in region 4 itself 26 on the East Coast of Demerara and of the 37 new housing areas in region 4 we have utilized 9,000 acres of land. Those are lands that government also had to make tough decisions because some of the lands were for the Ministry of Agriculture,” the Minister posited.
Mr. Croal noted too that there is a push to have the processing of titling completed much faster.
Over the next two days, hundreds of titles will also be given to persons who were previously allotted land.
