Increase in stipends for Local Government Representatives to take effect

Local Government Minister, Priya Manickchand, today announced that approval has been granted to increase the stipends of various Local Government representatives, with the payments to be made in the coming days.

The move was first announced in the 2026 National Budget.

In a statement, Ms. Manickchand said that stipends for Regional Councilors on the Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) will be increased from $30,000 to $50,000 per month, while Councilors on Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) are now expected to get a $30,000 per month stipend, reflecting an increase from the $3,000 stipend they previously received.

The NDC Chairperson’s stipend will increase from $10,000 to $50,000, while the Vice Chair’s stipend will increase from $5,000 to $40,000.

She said the increase is to ensure that the local bodies function better

“With more, our Councilors, Chairpersons, Vice Chairpersons will have more to give, so where much is given much is expected and I believe we can work together to make our local bodies function better and this is our part to ensure that we can to our part as a state to help these bodies function better,” Ms. Manickchand said.

The increase in the stipend payments follow the increase in subventions for local organs.

Municipalities now receive $50 million annually, while each NDC receives $30 million. Previously, NDCs received about $5 million per year, and municipalities received an annual disbursement of $18 million.
