Jagdeo says Government prepared to work with Opposition on national development issues

After bashing the PNC-led A Partnership For National Unity (APNU), for more than thirty five minutes this afternoon on the 94.1FM Afternoon Lockdown programme, PPP General Secretary, Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo extended an olive branch to his political opponents in the PNC/R, saying that the PPP believes that more development can come to citizens if the two major parties work together.

Mr. Jagdeo said his PPP has settled old scores and is now open for positive discussions.

The invitation by Mr. Jagdeo to work with the PNC is a rare move as his party has repeatedly refused to meet with the PNC on a number of important issues when requested.

“We are hoping still that in future there will always be an engagement with the PNC. Whatever is said we have already proven a point not because we are special and we do not want to be arrogant but because of our policies and track record that we are the only multi-ethnic party in this country. Therefore, we want to work with everyone, we want to have a positive engagement with the PNC in the future,” VP Jagdeo said.

During the radio interview that went on for more than an hour commercial free, the Vice President hammered the former APNU+AFC Government over its handling of the country’s economy, particularly its management of the oil and gas sector.

But he said, Guyana is on a different path right now that needs all hands on board.

“We want to have discussions with the PNC in the future, but if they keep spreading these lies then we have to work directly with people, we have to work in every community to debunk the lies etc, but it would be greater if we are all pulling together. In the 50’s there was one party that was working together but now, every day when I see some of these outrageous things being said and done then it makes it more remote now to get any engagement,” the PPP General Secretary said.

A number of longstanding members of the PNC/R switched to the PPP just before the Local Government polls.

In an earlier Press Conference, Mr. Jagdeo said that he is confident that the 2025 elections will see other members from the PNC crossing the floor.

Although the PPP campaigned heavily during the local government elections in Georgetown, Linden and New Amsterdam, it still lost those three main towns, but picked up an improved vote count and additional seats on the Councils.
