Mahdia school dorm fire survivor released from US hospital

One of the students who was critically injured in the Mahdia School Dorm fire which claimed the lives of 20 children, has been released from the Staten Island University Hospital, after undergoing three months of special medical care.

The young girl, Mariza Williams, was air-dashed to the United States back in May after surviving the dorm fire and receiving initial emergency care at the Georgetown Hospital.

In the US, she underwent a number of surgeries, skin grafts, physical rehabilitation, and grief counseling, as part of her recovery.

She was discharged from the hospital today.

The teenager suffered second and third-degree burns to her back, legs, and arms.

“The discharge of this little girl is a joyous chapter in this otherwise horrific story,” said Dr. Eric Cioe Peña, vice president of the Center for Global Health at Northwell Health.

Her parents Marlene and Max Williams, who also traveled to the US with her, offered thanks to the medical teams in both Guyana and the United States, that played a role in saving their daughter’s life and ensuring her rehablitation.
