In response to a tweet from a US Congressman linking sanctioned businessman and Presidential Candidate, Azruddin Mohamed, to Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro, Mr. Mohamed has stated that it is now clear that the PPP-led Government of Guyana is using taxpayer’s money to finance a campaign by a US lobbying firm aimed at falsely portraying him as an agent of the Maduro regime in Venezuela.
Mohamed rejected the links and said he stands firm when it comes to Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“I reject Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo. My father is Essequibo-born. I would never betray the soil my family is rooted in. I stand firmly for Guyana’s sovereignty; I always have and always will”, he said in a statement.
The statement on X (formerly twitter) from the US Congressman on Monday mirrored one of five “draft tweets” that were sent to the Congressman’s office by US lobbying firm, Continental Strategy, according to the firm’s filings with the US Justice Department. All of the “draft tweets” seek to link Mohamed to the Maduro regime.

The lobbying firm was hired by the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a cost of US$50,000 per month.
Mohamed in his statement said the information in the tweet sent out by the Congressman and those in the draft is false, as it pushes “a misleading narrative about me and my family to American lawmakers, including false tweets describing me as a “pro-Maduro puppet” and a threat to democracy.”
He accused the PPP of using a foreign nation to attack him by falsely linking him to a hostile regime.
“I am currently in consultation with my legal team about pursuing civil and criminal action against the Government of Guyana for issuing and financing these false claims through a registered foreign agent. I am also exploring diplomatic channels to ensure this abuse is exposed. I urge every Guyanese, regardless of political persuasion, to be vigilant. If they can do this to me, they can do it to any one of us. We must not allow this dangerous precedent to stand”, he said.
The lobbying firm, Continental Strategy LLC, was hired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guyana in December 2024 for an initial period of six months at a cost of $50,000 per month. According to the firm’s filing with the US Justice Department as a registered foreign agent, it has agreed to provide lobbying services and Government relations services to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guyana in connection with federal engagements and advocacy.
In an email that was sent out on June 23, 2025 by the Partner of the lobbying firm, John Barsa, to the Director of Communications in the Office of US Congressman, Carlos Gimenez, a total of five draft tweets were included for use by the Congressman. The email formed part of the public filings with the US Justice Department for the lobbying firm.
