A mother from Grove on the East Bank of Demerara is seeking answers from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, claiming that her 15-year-old daughter who was handed over to the agency’s care has since gone missing.
The Mother, Marcia King, said her child first went missing from home on the 31st May, and when she was located, she took her to the Grove Police Station. The mother said officers later handed the child over to the Child Care and Protection Agency to be in protective custody, but the child has reportedly gone missing again.
“Since Saturday my child is missing from the Child care and Protection agency, and when I called the officer on Monday, she informed me that my child has been missing since Saturday and if my child is missing since then, no one contacted me to tell me although they have my information and even up until Sunday, they never made a report that she was missing,” the concerned mother said.
Ms. King said she kept pressing the officers at the Child Protection Agency for information on her child’s whereabouts.
She said she was then told to visit the La Penitence and Ruimveldt stations, but none of those stations had any report of a missing child.

The mother said after searches and pleas, she visited the Prashad Nagar Police station and was told that the location had reports of two missing children. One of the reports was related to her child.
“When they brief us, they told us that they were sent to buy something but why would they send her on the road knowing the situation that she was in—she ran away and you collected her from me, so why was she on the road, who gave that permission,” the mother questioned.
Meanwhile, Opposition Member of Parliament, Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd, is calling on the state to provide answers. Todd said the case is one where the state has failed to secure and protect a child that is in its custody.
In addition, he said the continued silence from authorities is a cause of concern.
“And so now, its more than the welfare, this is a missing person, this is a police matter as well, all they have at police, is a long report of a missing child but there is no photograph, you have seen nobody highlighting this missing person and you have seen no police investigator making contact with the parents to update them or to say that they are actually doing an investigation,” Todd stated.
The Attorney said that there have been reports of a number of young girls being reported missing and the cases may be linked to a location on the West Demerara.
He said the authorities have been slow to act on many of the reports.
News Source made repeated efforts to get a comment from the Child Care and Protection Agency. Calls to the agency’s numbers went unanswered.
