New Education Ministry app allows you to track school construction progress

The Ministry of Education is bringing the public on board its monitoring of the construction of schools and other educational facilities nationwide through a digital interactive map that will allow you to view the construction progress from the comfort of your home.

Minister of Education Priya Manickchand said the interactive map will exhibit all of the schools and school facilities in Guyana that are either under construction or are being repaired.

“We have been building an enormous amount of schools – primary, nursery, secondary dorms – building, rebuilding or extending significantly all across Guyana,” the Education Minister said.

The interactive map will provide real-time updates on the status of various projects, allowing citizens to monitor the performance of the contractors and the Government’s investments in education infrastructure, the Education Ministry said.

Head of Information Systems at the Education Ministry, Phil Mingo explained that the interactive map provides critical information about various components of each project, including the name of the school, the name of the contractor, cost, and deadlines set.

“You can see the contractor, the comments, when the tender was closed, when it was advertised, which region, what’s the contract sum, if there is a particular consultant at the time, date of award, and the start date,” he pointed out.

Minister Manickchand said the application would allow for greater transparency and access to information, even as the Education Ministry confronts challenges in the execution of the projects.

It was noted that the application is in the testing phase, and can be located on  https://v5.education.gov.gy/all.

The initiative is part of the broader effort by the Government to improve the quality of education and foster long-term sustainable development across the nation. Last year, the Education Minister and her officials faced a tongue lashing from the President at an early morning meeting over the many delays facing various school projects.
