New PPP Member of Parliament takes up seat

People’s Progressive Party member Ms. Sheila Veerasammy was on Thursday sworn in as the newest member of the National Assembly and will occupy a seat on the opposition benches.

Ms. Veerasammy has replaced Dr. Clive Jagan who recently tendered his resignation because of ill-health.

Her name was extracted from the PPP’s list at the 2015 elections. She is currently the General Secretary of the women’s arm of the PPP – the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO).

The Speaker was the first to congratulate the new MP on her appointment. Dr. Barton Scotland said he hopes she will add luster and polish to the House.

Veerasammy joined the PPP’s youth arm in 1979 and later studied political science in Russia on a scholarship. She told News Source that she intends to use her stint in the National Assembly to have issues affecting women resolved and looks forward to the support of the government and her fellow opposition members.

She said she has no immediate plans but will throw full support behind her party. “I have my honesty, my clear-cut vision which my character totally depends upon,” she added.
