NICIL says it is more accountable under PPP

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited fired off at the Leader of the Opposition for questioning the state agency’s accountability.

According to the statement, the agency which falls under the privatization unit is more accountable under the People’s Progressive Party in Government than it was when the People’s National Congress was last in Government over twenty years ago.

In the release NICIL said Granger’s recent attack on NICIL and its Head, Winston Brassington “is merely his part to play in the combined opposition’s continued games of charades which disguises their true motive of derailing development in Guyana.”

The statement which read like a text from a political rally rather than one from a state-owned agency described the concerns of the Opposition Leader as nothing new and said his concerns are subjective “as he applies a convenient interpretation of NICIL’s functions in order to serve APNU’s current agenda o opposing every act of development undertaken in this country because it is what the opposition does.”

“NICIL, a creation of Carl Greenidge under the PNC regime, continues to demonstrate that it has done more for accountability under the PPP administration than was ever done by Mr. Greenidge. This was covered extensively by the media in 2012.

NICIL has tabled in the National Assembly audited accounts up to 2010 prior to the recess of Parliament and has submitted its 2011 audited financial statements to the National Assembly which will be tabled in Parliament when reconvened”, the agency stated.

At a Friday press conference, Mr. Granger said “NICIL is a rogue company. We cannot tolerate this sort of behavior in which government funds, state funds, the people’s money, are being disbursed without accountability”.

He was at the time speaking about the Marriott hotel deal and recent disclosures by the Head of NICIL that an investor was still being sought and that NICIL was currently the only major player in the multi million dollar project.

NICIL has since said its involvement in the Marriott project is very much a part of its “league” to invest in projects that are good for NICIL and the country as a whole, adding that “Mr. Granger’s assertions of “scams’’ or “money lost’’ are clearly ill-informed and  demonstrate the opposition’s lack of interest to understand the project’s financing.”
