Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton offered congratulations to all students who wrote this year’s National Grade Six Assessment Exams (NGSA). He noted that while many students did extremely well, there were many more who could have performed better if better systems were put in place at some schools.
Mr. Norton said there needs to be a “ground up” approach to ensure that more students are able to matriculate at the NGSA level.
“While we are happy that a small percentage did extremely well, we are concerned that our education system is not delivering high quality education across all schools so that all our children can matriculate,” the Opposition leader said.
According to the APNU Presidential Candidate, should his party be elected to Government at the upcoming elections, it would place emphasis on human resource development from an early stage, with a heavy focus on early childhood development and education.
“We intend to start by establishing a network of early childhood education systems so that our children can be nurtured at a very tender age into becoming useful citizens who can contribute at different levels at the Guyanese society,” Mr. Norton noted.

The Opposition Leader said the education system by its design, has historically failed many children which he believes has led to a high level of illiteracy and lack of numeracy skills in the society.
To this end, he said an APNU government will initiate a national literacy programme with the aim of helping those students who system has failed.
“The APNU believes, that one way to contribute to the development of the education system is to ensure that our teachers have a liveable income. We guarantee them a liveable income, an income that is no less than $200,000 per month like we are guaranteeing other public servants,” Mr. Norton noted.
To further boost the morale of teachers and students, Mr. Norton said his party is guaranteeing the establishment of a national school’s transportation system, cash transfers for students as well as a policy for smaller classroom sizes to increase performance.
