PNC wants higher subvention for UG

The University of Guyana is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and the People’s National Congress wants the Government to dedicate more resources and attention to the University.

In a statement to mark the golden milestone, the People’s National Congress called for there to be a bigger subvention in the National Budget for the University.

“The PNCR calls on the PPP/C administration to increase the subvention for the University of Guyana and to adopt an education first policy. The lack of funding to UG has stifled the University’s ambition to produce individuals with the requisite skills to aid national development”, the statement said.

The party also wants to see more attention paid to specific departments. According to the PNC, in order for the university to aid in moulding the present and transforming the future, more needs to be invested in, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Party also calls for the immediate improvement/investment in libraries, laboratories and lecture theatres.

Over the years, there have been concerns about the state of the University. The Government has been accused of neglecting the University although the Campus at Tain in Berbice opened under the current administration.

Over the past few years, the University was rocked by several protests by administrative staff and lecturers over several grievances. The financing of the University has also come under sharp focus with the current Vice Chancellor looking to implement several changes under his watch.
