29-year-old Police Corporal, Shareef Mohamed, was charged today over causing the death of two men by dangerous driving.
He was granted bail in the sum of $750,000 on each of the two causing death by dangerous driving charges, and $10,000 bail on each of the four other charges he is facing in relation to the same deadly accident.
The two victims have been identified as Collis Bristol and Akeem Burgess. Both men lived on the East Coast of Demerara. They were on their way home on the night of Sunday, 28th June 2026 when they were hit down by a speeding car. The driver never stopped. Both men died on the scene, leading their families to launch their own search for the driver by offering a reward for information.
Information was received and the Policeman was nabbed after damages to his car were found to be consistent with the accident. A forensic examination of the vehicle, including the use of DNA samples from the victims, confirmed that the car that was driven by the Policeman was involved in the fatal accident.
In addition to the two causing death by dangerous driving charges, Mohamed was also charged with the offenses of Failing to stop after an accident, Failing to render assistance, Operating an uncertified motor vehicle and Failing to report an accident.
The accused will make his next Court appearance soon.
