Political stalwart and former PNCR General Secretary Amna Ally has died

Veteran politician and former Government Minister and PNCR General Secretary, Amna Ally, passed away at the Georgetown Hospital this morning, one day after being rushed there with a serious heart complaint. She was reportedly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in a critical condition and passed away earlier this morning.

Ally resigned from the People’s National Congress last year over disagreements with the party leader, Aubrey Norton and the direction that the party was moving under his leadership.

She served the People’s National Congress for more than four decades, rising to the position of General Secretary. She remained in that position for a number of years, while the PNCR was in Opposition and in Government as part of the APNU+AFC Coalition.

Ms. Ally served the the APNU+AFC Government as the Minister of Social Protection, while maintaining the role of Chief Whip in the National Assembly during the PNC Government.

She is being remembered as a stalwart of the party and of Guyanese politics.
