PPP parliamentarians will donate or refund salary increases

Having decided that they will not be accepting the increases to their salaries as approved by the government, the Members of Parliament for the Opposition, People’s Progressive Party have decided to donate the increases to charity every month or write a cheque and send it back to the treasury.

The PPP objected earlier this week when its Members of Parliament received their pay slips and realized that although they said they did not want increases to their salaries, the increases were still present.

At a press conference at Freedom House on Friday afternoon, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo said the party’s position on the issue remains firm. He said the members will now either write a cheque and pay the money back to the treasury or donate it every month to a charity of their choice.

The opposition party has roasted the government over the 10% to 50% increases given to government ministers and parliamentarians.

When questioned as to whether the PPP could really have a say in the furore over the increases with its own record in office, Mr. Jagdeo said he does not need to convince anyone about anything. He said citizens will have to look at the record of the two parties while in office and judge them on that.

The former President turned Opposition Leader said the new government should also not be comparing itself to the wrongs of the PPP since it has positioned itself as the better party.

The government has sought to defend the increases as an investment in quality of governance. Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo earlier this week said the outrage over the issue has ran its course.
