PPP supporters “want to change back to where they were under PPP” -says Rohee

The General Secretary of the Opposition, People’s Progressive Party, Clement Rohee is convinced that Guyanese are worse off under the nine-month old APNU+AFC administration and he believes they want a return of the PPP to office.

Mr. Rohee was up early this morning to cast his vote in the Local Government Elections.

During his party’s 23 years in office, it only called local government elections once.

According to Mr. Rohee, PPP supporters are energized for the local government elections and “they will be using these elections to the APNU+AFC that they are fed up and disgusted and they want to change back to where they were under the PPP Civic administration.

The PPP General Secretary told News Source that the voting process for him went well at his Providence polling station. However, he noted that elections are usually judged on what happens before the vote and what happens after because the voting process is a straight forward one.

In the run up to the elections, the PPP had raised several concerns about the readiness of the Guyana Elections Commission for the polls. It wanted full reform of GECOM before the elections.

Mr. Rohee said many of the concerns of his party were addressed but there were many more that were not addressed. He said “the struggle continues” for the PPP and the party is still not fully satisfied with the efforts of the Elections Commission to address its concerns. The General Secretary said the party will continue to work to ensure there are changes at the Elections Commission before the next General elections which are due in 2020.

Just after the National Elections last year, the PPP launched several weeks of protests after it was booted out of office.

It called for the immediate resignation of the Commission Chairman, Dr. Steve Surujbally.

The Chairman never resigned even as the PPP took its calls and concerns to the international community and the court.
