President not happy with pace of works for connecting roads for new Demerara River Bridge; No work extensions to be granted

President Irfaan Ali this morning scolded contractors executing several projects on the East Bank of Demerara for not having a 24-hour work schedule in place to meet their deadlines. He noted that there will be no extensions on the projects.

Just before the break of dawn, the President visited the project which is expected to connect roads in the vicinity of the new Demerara Bridge and expressed his displeasure at the state and pace of works.

He observed that the works are all behind schedule, and demanded that the roads in the areas must be completed to accommodate the traffic that will be coming off of the new Demerara Bridge.

“I told you all to get this work done in line with a work culture, these contracts are awarded on the condition that people work around the clock and get the work completed, none of the staff and contractors are out here,” the President said during the crack of dawn visit.

Noting that residents are already inconvenienced by many of the ongoing road works, President Ali said contractors must ensure that works are completed at a pace to ensure that the inconveniences are not extended.

“This project will not be extended one day beyond the timeline, you all attitude and work ethic are what will ensure that his project is completed on time, I told you all I will be here and not even the engineer is here,” the President stated.

Meanwhile, at a visit to the site of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge, the President expressed satisfaction with the pace of work there.

With that project scheduled for completion by end of this year, the President expressed confidence that the new bridge will bring much needed relief to residents of Region Three.

On a separate issue, the President also expressed his frustration over the parking of big trucks by contractors on the major roadways, urging the Police to ensure that the matter is rectified and that trucks are not allowed to park along the roadways that attract a heavy traffic flow.
