Sanctioned Permanent Secretary and Member of the People’s Progressive Party, Mae Thomas, will not be on list of candidates for the governing People’s Progressive Party in the coming General and Regional Elections, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said this afternoon.
Thomas, was sanctioned by the US Government along with businessman Azruddin Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed. The US said she used her position as Permanent Secretary to manipulate processes to favour the Mohameds.
She was sent on administrative leave by the Government, but was never removed from office.
Jagdeo said she will not be on his party’s list.
“The way I see it, I don’t think she wants to be on the list but the way I personally see it, no she will not be on the list, that is how I see it now as General Secretary of the party but the party has not debated these matters as yet,” the Vice President said.
The Vice President said the party is in the process of compiling its list and has already been getting a number of suggestions from party structures.
“We have not put out our list of candidates as yet, people will be considering the names of the candidates, we have had suggestions from our base, we are a party that has so many names now that it is hard to get down to the required level,” Mr. Jagdeo said.
The PPP General Secretary said his party’s membership has grown over the years and putting the list together could be difficult as there are many good choices.
“The party has not made a decision as yet, I am meeting with the structures later this month, we have names coming in, we have sent out our circulars that is how we work to groups all across the country and they are submitting names of people and then we will meet with the structures and discuss this extensively and then we will make decisions”, he said.
Elections are set to take place on the 1st September, with Nomination Day set for the 14th July.
