Sophia youth remanded over murder of niece for earrings

An 18-year-old, Sophia man was remanded to jail today, after being charged with the murder of his 18-month-old niece.

The Court heard that the man threw the young child out of the window of her father’s small wooden shack over her gold earrings.

His name was given as Sherwin Roberts.

The charge stated that on the 1st September, at 98 North Sophia, he murdered Rhoshawna Pilgrim.

The incident reportedly took place between 03:30 -04:00 hrs on Friday morning, at the Sophia home.

The accused allegedly broke a window of the house and gained access to the house, where he attempted to remove the earrings from his sleeping niece.

The older siblings of the young baby saw the man in action and raised an alarm by screaming. It was then that he grabbed the crying child and threw her through the window into the swampy backyard of the property.

He reportedly made his way to the area and covered the child with several pieces of wood and zinc sheets leaving her to die.

Her body was submerged under approximately one and a half feet of water and slush.

The incident sent shockwaves throughout the community. The accused will make his next court appearance later this month.
