Support rally held for Guyanese activist detained in the US

Several persons including a number of Opposition political figures, gathered at the Square of the Revolution in Georgetown this evening for a support and unity public meeting for detained activist Melissa Atwell-Holder aka “Melly Mel”.

Atwell-Holder was taken into custody last Thursday from her New York home by agents from the US Department of Homeland Security.

She was later transferred to an immigration detention facility in Louisiana.

The reason for her arrest and detention, and the specific complaints against her remain unclear.

However, it is suspected that the arrest and detention may be related to an alleged immigration issue that reportedly preceded her marriage and reported adjustment of immigration status.

Since her detention, she has been allowed to make calls to her family and friends, and has said she is doing fine.

The activist, who was relentless in exposing allegations of corruption within the Guyana Government, is expected to face a US Immigration Judge in June. However, a bond hearing is likely to take place before that hearing.

Many of her supporters believe that her arrest was triggered by complaints that were filed against her by the Government of Guyana, which had accused her of a number of Cyber crimes locally over many of her social media statements and revelations.
