Housing Ministry to complete infrastructure works in all new housing areas before year end -Croal

As the Government continues with its housing development plan across the country, Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, made a commitment today for infrastructural works to be completed in new housing areas before the end of this year.

He said once the works are completed, persons who were allocated house lots and commercial lots will have full access to those lands to begin construction.

Speaking at the Housing Ministry’s Dream Realised event in Berbice this morning, where hundreds of house lots were allocated, Minister Croal said the complaints by persons who received house lots and still cannot access the lands have been mounting.

However, he noted that work has to be done to prepare those lands before construction could start.

“Our committed is that by the next Dream Realized Housing activity, we will start issuing letters that commits that all allocations that are being done, access will be available by the last quarter of this year. So, all persons being allocated in 2025 and before too, will see and have access to build your home, not later than the end of this year,” the Housing Minister stated.

He said infrastructure work will be fast-tracked in many areas to ensure that the Ministry is on par with allocation and development of housing schemes.

“So, we are committing Billions of dollars to ensure that we can do these as quickly as possible and I have said to you we have committed 50,000 house lots for the first five year under President Ali, as I speak to you, we are over 42,300 allocations. So, if I say to you today that our 2025 programme involves clearing the backlog or pending applicants in region 6, it therefore means that we have another 4,500 applicants,” Mr. Croal stated.

Additionally, the Minister once again sounded the alarm over squatting.

He said with the Government’s housing programme expanding rapidly, citizens have no reason to squat on Government lands. He said tough actions will be taken against those who insist on squatting.

“We have said no new squatting will be recognised and we have given the enforcement arm of the CHPA the authority to move on any new squatter to just break without consulting, as I said what we have existing ones to engage not to necessarily recognize because we have an aggressive land programme and there should be absolutely no reason or excuse, anyone has to squat,” the Minister explained.

The Ministry of Housing is hoping to reach its target of 50,000 allocations in five years within the coming months.
