Venezuelan woman remanded to prison over attempted murder of lover

A Venezuelan woman was charged and remanded to prison on Monday over the attempted murder of her Guyanese lover.

The woman, Veronical Alfaro, is accused of attempting to murder businessman Frederick Standford at his Mango Landing residence and business place in Region Seven.

A Police report stated the two shared an intimate relationship for just over a year, and lived together at the businessman’s residence, which also housed his grocery shop in the mining area of Mango Landing.

In Court, the Magistrate heard that on the 9th March, the accused left the residence she shared with the businessman and ventured to a nearby shop where she was observed consuming alcoholic drinks with another Venezuelan man.

It is alleged that when she returned home at around 11pm and knocked on the door, she was told by the businessman that she should “go back to where you went”.

The Police report stated that when the businessman eventually opened the door, the accused allegedly threw gasolene from a bottle on him and lit a fire from a lighter, causing both parties to receive burn injuries about their bodies, as some of the gasolene had also fallen on her during a scuffle.

Persons rushed to their aid and the two were taken to the Eteringbang Police station and air-dashed to Georgetown for medical attention. The businessman suffered serious burns about his body, leading to the attempted murder charge against the Venezuelan woman.

She will remain in prison until the continuation of the case on the 17th June, 2025.
