VP Jagdeo supports Attorney General in lawsuit against Melly Mel

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, is standing by PPP Central Committee Member, Attorney General Anil Nandlall, amid allegations that Mr. Nandlall, has been leaking confidential party and government information to social media activist, Melissa Atwell known as Melly Mel.

In a number of Social Media posts last week, Atwell claimed that Mr. Nandlall has been providing her with inside information about his party and government colleagues.

Mr. Nandlall has denied the allegations and has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the activist.

On Thursday, Vice President Jagdeo said he does not pay too much attention to unverified allegations, but for now, Mr. Nandlall enjoys his full confidence.

“So, when I get verified info and we have our means of verifying information too and that is when we act on them but so far, I have not dealt with any unverified, there is no way of providing these matters but as of now, Anil Nandlall enjoys my confidence of General Secretary of the part,” Jagdeo said.

Mr. Nandlall has denied knowing “Melly Mel” or ever having any discussions with her or ever being in communication with her.

His lawsuit claims that Atwell’s posts contained false, malicious, and defamatory allegations that have irreparably damaged his reputation and standing as a senior attorney and government minister.

“The nine publications made by the Defendant that have been complained about in these proceedings have seriously and irreparably damaged and are likely to continue to seriously and irreparably damage, the reputation and standing of the Claimant among his Cabinet colleagues, his political peers and indeed all right-thinking members of society in Guyana, the Caribbean and throughout the world,” Nandlall told the Court.

Atwell said she is standing by her claims, and is ready to provide evidence whenever that time comes.
