As the total number of bodies recovered from the MV Barima ferry tragedy climbed to 53 with more than 55 persons still missing, Prime Minister Mark Phillips on Tuesday night declared that the Government has nothing to hide, as it will ensure an independent Commission of Inquiry into the ferry tragedy.
“I want to reassure you that we have nothing to hide. I believe and I live for transparency”, the Prime Minister told reporters.
It was explained that divers were able to reach the wreckage of the sunken ferry and while one body was identified in the wreckage, the divers were unable to retrieve the body.
“More divers will go down and with more equipment and it is our hope that they will be able to extract the body from the vessel, but as I speak to you, they have been able to identify a body but were unable to retrieve it, but that is not the end of it, efforts will still be made to recover that body”, Prime Minister Phillips said.
The Prime Minister said the divers will continue with their operation, as additional support is coming in from Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil.
There has been no sign of life in the past two days as the search operation continues offshore Essequibo where the ferry sank. The search area has been further widened, as more bodies are being recovered.
The total number of survivors now stands at 76, as persons who were rescued but not immediately recorded as rescued, have now been counted.
