Opposition files Parliamentary Motion for Joint Task Force to be established on border controversy

The APNU+AFC Opposition wants the Government of Guyana to immediately take steps to establish a multi-party, multi-stakeholder Task Force to address all aspects of the clear and present danger that Venezuela’s recent actions could have against the good order, safety and security of Guyana and its people.

The Opposition has filed a motion in the National Assembly to address the establishment of the Task Force. It hopes that the motion will be moved and addressed at Thursday’s sitting of the National Assembly as a matter of urgent public importance.

The APNU+AFC Opposition believes the Task Force would also be used to take all acts and things necessary for the preservation of the territorial integrity of Guyana and the safety and well-being of the citizens of Guyana.

In the motion, the Opposition noted the recent actions of the Venezuelan President in announcing his plans to move ahead with making Guyana’s Essequibo region, a new state of Venezuela.

Guyana has rejected Venezuela’s acts of aggression, and the international community has remained firmly behind Guyana.

The National Assembly of Guyana in November passed a motion reaffirming that Essequibo belongs to Guyana and reaffirming the support of the Assembly for Guyana’s case which is currently before the International Court.
