Police want to question Opposition Leader over alleged “corrupt transaction” related to leak of surveillance video recordings of shooting incident

The Guyana Police Force is investigating the leak of surveillance video recordings from its Safe Country Command Centre and wants to speak to Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed after he released the video recordings at a press conference on Monday.

Police investigators led by Superintendent of Police Rodwell Sarabo turned up at the Opposition Leader’s home today to question him about the recordings.

The investigators were told that Mr. Mohamed believes they should make contact with his Attorneys.

Superintendent Sarabo said Mohamed should make himself available to the Criminal Investigations Department to be questioned about an alleged corrupt transaction.

In a statement on Monday night in response to Mohamed’s release of the surveillance video recordings of the shooting incident involving the Head of the Special Branch, the Guyana Police Force claimed that a 20-year-old Police Constable had been placed under close arrest for allegedly downloading the video recording and allegedly making it available to the Opposition Leader.

The Police in the statement claimed that the young Constable was allegedly paid $800,000 for the video recordings that were captured by the Government’s Smart Country security cameras.

In a statement today, the Office of the Leader of the Opposition said it will not disclose the name or identify of its source that supplied the video of the shooting incident in Kitty, which raised new questions on the Police Force’s official account.

At a press conference on Monday, the Leader of the Opposition played the leaked CCTV video recordings of what transpired on the night of October 12, 2026 and contradicted the earlier police accounts.

While the Police Force has not offered any comment on the contents of the video, it has launched a full investigation into the release of the video recordings.

In a press statement this afternoon, the Opposition Leader’s Office said it will not release the identify of its source but would only say it celebrates Police officers, Government employees, and individuals who expose criminality within law enforcement, corruption in Government, and all unlawful conduct by those entrusted with serving the people.

“The Office makes it unequivocally clear that it will not voluntarily disclose the identities of its confidential sources or compromise individuals who have provided information concerning matters of serious public interest. The Government’s responsibility is to establish the truth, preserve the evidence, protect constitutional rights, and ensure accountability. Whistleblowers acting lawfully and in the public interest must be protected, not persecuted. The public interest is served when wrongdoing is exposed, not when it is concealed,” the Opposition Leader Office said.

The Opposition Leader’s office said there has been absence of willingness by the Government to disclose critical information that demands scrutiny by the people.

“This Government, it appears, wants to operate without scrutiny while serious allegations of corruption remain unanswered. We are deeply concerned about the use of state institutions to pursue the extradition and imprisonment of effective political opponents, alongside allegations of suppressed evidence, fabricated accounts, and the presentation of falsified evidence,” the Opposition Leader office said.

The office stated that the Government must not be permitted to use the machinery of the State to intimidate, persecute, or punish whistle blowers for exposing corruption, criminality, and abuses of public office. This would constitute a grave abuse of power and a betrayal of the public trust.

Additionally, the Opposition office noted that an impartial investigation must now be launched into the shooting incident since the video laid bare what happened on the night of October 12 and heavily contradicts the Police Force’s account.

Mr. Mohamed continues to state that it is clear there was an attempt to assassinate him on the night of October 12 when he drove along the road where the Special Branch Head lives in Kitty.

The video recordings showed Mohamed’s car being pursued by a Police vehicle as it stopped at a traffic light and the Special Branch head coming out of the Police vehicle and firing shots at the car before the occupants were forced out.
