North Ruimveldt man remanded to jail over peacemaker’s murder

At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today, 26-year-old North Ruimveldt resident, Jermaine Abel, was remanded to prison for the murder of Haffiz Douglas, who also lived in the same community.

Douglas was stabbed to death on November 6, 2017 as he attempted to prevent a brawl between Abel and his brother.

The Court heard that on the day of the incident, a row between the Abel siblings became violent and it was then that Douglas stepped in to prevent the two brothers from injuring each other. Instead, Douglas was stabbed to the body and collapsed and died on the spot.

The brother who is accused of inflicting the deadly wound reportedly bolted from the scene but eventually turned himself over to investigators.

He was immediately arrested. At the Courthouse today, the murder accused did not appear too worried about the charge as it was read to him. He has been remanded to jail until tomorrow when he will have to make a next appearance before the Chief Magistrate.

A number of witnesses to the murder are expected to testify during the case.
