PPP practicing “sour grapes politics” -Nagamootoo

Vice Chairman of the Alliance for Change (AFC) and former executive member of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Moses Nagamootoo, has accused the PPP/C of resorting to “sour grapes politics” in its condemnation of the parliamentary opposition parties attempt to form a broad alliance.

Nagamootoo reminded during a press conference on Wednesday that faced with a similar situation as today, the PPP in 1990 had moved to join forces with other opposition parties but those talks collapsed when the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) opposed Dr. Cheddi Jagan as the consensus presidential candidate.

“Having tasted rejection more than once, the PPP now resorts to sour grapes politics by attacking all those who want to come together in a broad alliance,” Nagamootoo opined.

The AFC is currently in talks with the main opposition, A Partnership for National Unity and other interested groups to form a pro – democracy alliance ahead of the May 11 elections.

AFC says it has submitted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to the APNU for its consideration.

But the Alliance for Change is not taking distractions from the PPP/C lightly.

Nagamootoo believes that even though for 60 years, the search for a multi-ethnic, multi-class, national coalition government has eluded us, the goals of national unity remain viable and ought to be pursued by all genuine patriots.

He defended AFC’s alliance policy, which he said is based on principles of “winner-does-not-take-all and inclusive democracy.”

The former PPP executive reminded that it was Dr. Jagan who advocated ethnic and national unity and in 1964 he invited. L.F.S. Burnham to form a PPP/PNC coalition government.

“It is pure opportunism that the PPP’s pseudo-leaders are today accusing the AFC with betrayal and selling out for exploring the coalition idea,” he added.

Nagamootoo reminded that the PPP has incorporated into its ranks elements who once determined to destroy the party even as he highlighted the importation of Odinga Lumumba from the PNC, Joe Hamilton from the House of Israel, Leslie Ramsammy from the Guyana Republican Party, Nanda Gopaul from the Guyana Labour Party (GLP), Kwame McCoy from Good and Green Guyana (GGG) and Mansoor Nadir from The United Force (TUF).

To this end, the AFC Vice Chairman said the PPP has no moral authority to lecture anyone on alliance politics.

The AFC is adamant that Guyanese have nothing to fear or lose from the broadest possible unity to bring change on May 11.
