President wants Rodney Commission to finish its work “as soon as possible”

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry looking into the death of Founder of the Working People’s Alliance, Dr. Walter Rodney, has been conducting hearings at various sessions over the past year and has seen extensions on a number of occasions.

President David Granger believes that it is time for the Commission to wrap up its work “as soon as possible”.

Speaking to members of the media at the Presidential Complex on Friday, Mr. Granger said while, he is not scrapping the work of the Commission, he would like to make it clear that its work must be completed at the earliest possible time.

“I will like to bring it to a conclusion as early as possible. It must finish its work”, the President said.

The President said the Commission has been doing its work for over 15 months and he does not envisage another extension.

The Commission was set up by Former President Donald Ramotar in February 2014 and more than one year later, the Commission is still accepting evidence through its public hearings and has cost taxpayers over $100 million.

While in opposition, Granger repeatedly raised concern about the amount of money being spent on the Commission by the former government and he expressed worry too that the Commission was set up so that it could be used on the campaign trail as a political tool.

The PPP did just that and used several pieces of testimony from the Commission as part of its campaign talking points.

The PPP accused Granger of staying away from the Commission because it believes, he had something to hide. But Granger has always made it clear that he has no need to appear before the Commission because he was not even in Guyana at the time of Rodney’s death in 1980.

Granger has even provided photographic evidence to show that he was in Yugoslavia at the time on official duties as an officer of the Guyana Defence Force.

The purpose of the hearings before the Commission is to receive testimony and evidence from interested parties to enable it to examine the facts and circumstances immediately prior, at the time of, and subsequent to, the death of Dr. Walter Rodney in order to determine, as far as possible, who or what was responsible for the explosion resulting in the death of Dr. Walter Rodney.
