The Ministry of Education is calling on religious organisations across Guyana to join in national prayer for students, teachers and school communities as the 2026–2027 academic year gets underway next Monday.

In a memorandum today, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain, appealed to leaders of religious organisations to include special prayers during worship services and other gatherings in the days leading up to August 31, when the new school year begins.

The initiative, described by the Ministry as a “National Call to Prayer,” is intended to provide spiritual support for students, educators and families as schools reopen across the country.

The Ministry said education is not only a national priority, but is also a “sacred trust,” adding that spiritual support can strengthen the foundation on which learning, character development and national development are built.

The Ministry expressed appreciation for the role religious leaders play within communities, noting that their leadership, guidance and spiritual influence can contribute to the well-being and success of students, educators and families.

“The MoE expresses its sincere appreciation for your continued partnership in building a brighter future for Guyana through faith, education, and service,” the memo stated.

In the past year, the Ministry of Education has found itself battling with rising complaints of bullying and violence in schools. The Education Minister, Sonia Parag, has made it clear that she has a zero tolerance to bullying and violence, and perpetrators will be not escape punishment.
