Carter Center trying to get just One official into Guyana for vote recount

The Carter Center is hoping that the Government will give the clearance for one of its officials to fly into Guyana on Monday on a flight from Miami to observe the vote recount process.

In a brief interview with News Source this afternoon, Carter Center Director for its Democracy Program, David Carroll explain that the request is just for one person since the other members of the Carter Center Observer team are unable to head to Guyana at this time.

Mr. Carroll explained that the Carter Center believes it would be very important for it to see the electoral process to completion.

He said the Carter Center believes the process is at a critical stage and with its accreditation as an observer still valid, it wants to observe the process as it falls under their mandate as an observer.

He said there have been efforts by the Center to get on to senior Government officials but those efforts have failed so far.

Mr. Carroll said he is still hopeful that some permission could be granted to allow that person to travel on the flight that is coming to Guyana from Miami to fly out US citizens and permanent residents.

That special flight was organised by the US Embassy to take Americans home in wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. The airports in Guyana have been closed for over a month and only special flights are being approved.

The US Embassy in a statement today explained that it requested that the flight be allowed to bring in members of the Carter Center Observer Group and another Observer team. The embassy said while permission was granted for the special flight to operate, there was no permission granted for anyone other than the flight crew to come in on the flight.

The embassy is hoping for a review of its request with the vote recount now set to begin on Wednesday.
