The Guyana Elections Commission has finalised its work plan and has decided that the recount of votes for the 2020 elections will begin on Wednesday.
The Commission is set to finalize the recount order and have it gazetted on Monday.
The Commission met today and wrapped up discussions on several of the issues for the recount. After the meeting, it was noted that the Chairperson of the Commission has indicated that she will make a final decision on the issue of livestream.
She has reportedly proposed that there be periodic updates when the tabulation is taking place and a possible audio stream of the count. Her decision on those issues are likely to be made tomorrow before the final order is gazetted.
Commissioner Sase Gunraj is still pushing for a full livestream of the count, indicating that the elections belong to the people and GECOM should have nothing to hide.
The recount will be observed by political party agents, local and international observers and a high-level CARICOM team will be scrutinizing the entire process. The recount will be taking place simultaneously in ten workstations at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre.
The Chairperson has not budged from other decisions already made by the Commission.
Commissioner Vincent Alexander said he has noted that there are those political persons who are speaking of transparency but do not want the review of documents from the original count. He said if they want to talk about transparency then it cannot only be on an issue they want.
GECOM has set a 25 day timeline for the recount.
