The stockpile of over 30,000 tonnes of stone by the Ministry of Public Works near the Providence Red Road entrance shifted the earth beneath the road this afternoon, resulting in a massive bulge and the road bursting open in several sections at the entrance.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and several Government engineers rushed across to the area this afternoon just after 4pm following the occurrence, which sent road vendors scampering to safety.
The damaged section of the road has been completely blocked off and is expected to remain closed for several weeks. The Minister of Works, Juan Edghill, said emergency works will begin soon, as engineers continue to assess the situation.
The stockpile of the large quantity of aggregate stone on the empty plot nearby is being blamed for the situation. The Works Ministry has been stockpiling the material on the empty plot of land to supply government contractors carrying out various government jobs in nearby areas.

“What we can see and what the engineers have advised is that the road has bulged, some eight feet up and about 150 metres down, and that bulging seems to have been attributed by the weight that is on the stockpile and the nature of the soil. You know this area was old cane fields”, Mr. Edghill explained.
He said Government engineers and representatives from utility companies in the area have already been contacted to begin to examine a solution. At least one underground main water line is believed to have been damaged by the “bulging of the road”.
Minister Edghill said emergency works will have to begin almost immediately, but at this time, the workers are looking to level off some of the stockpile to ease the weight close to the road.
