Over 200 cases disposed in High Court last year  -DPP Chambers

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has announced that it managed to dispose of 221 cases last year.

Of that amount, the DPP chambers said ,153 of the cases received attention in the High Courts in Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo, while 58 matters were not prosecuted by the DPP. 

Of the 153 cases, 98 were presented at the Demerara Assizes, 32 at the Berbice Assizes and 23 at the Essequibo Assizes.

The DPP Chambers also reported that for last year, there were 88 cases for the offence of Murder, 3 cases for the offence of Manslaughter ,51 cases for Sexual Offences, 10, cases for the offence of Attempt to Commit Murder and 1 case for the offence of inflicting Grievous Bodily Harm.

In addition, the DPP Chambers was able to secure 36 convictions, while there were 45 formal verdicts of not guilty, 33 not guilty verdicts by jury, 63 guilty pleas,6 hung juries and 1 mistrial. 

One Hundred and Eighty-Nine (189) accused persons had their trials in the High Courts, the DPP Chambers reported. 

For last year, the DPP Chambers said it appeared in 19 Appeals in the Court of Appeal. 

Of the 19 appeals, 1 was for the offence of Attempt to Commit Murder, 8 Sexual Offences, 4 for the offence of Murder, 2 for Manslaughter and one each for Felonious Wounding, Simple Larceny, Causing Death by Dangerous Driving and Wounding With intent.

Further, the DPP Chambers also appeared in 17 matters at the Demerara Full Court.

Five (5)of the matters were for Possession of Narcotics, 2 for Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm, another 2 for Failure to Comply with Production Order of the Anti-Money Laundering Legislation, and one each for the offences of Forgery, Sexual Assault, Receiving Stolen Property, Simple Larceny, Robbery under Arms, Causing Death by Dangerous Driving, Operating a Civil Aircraft without Airworthiness Certificate and Conspiracy to Defraud.   While the Chamber appeared in three matters at the Caribbean Court of Justice, (CCJ) – 2 for the offence of Murder and 1 for a Sexual Offence.

The DPP’s Office also said it offered legal advice in 3,452 police files.
