GRA Officer and CANU ranks remain in custody over kidnapping claims

An official of the Guyana Revenue Authority along with two ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, remain in custody over claims by a Brazilian businessman that he was kidnapped by the three and held until a ransom was paid in the town of Lethem.

The man is claiming that the incident took place more than a month ago.

Police officials have confirmed the arrest of the GRA official and the two CANU ranks, as part of the investigations of the claims made by the Brazilian man. Investigators are tightlipped on their probe.

However, other Law Enforcement sources are claiming that the Brazilian man was allegedly caught smuggling mercury in the Lethem area, and paid a pribe to law enforcement officials there, to avoid facing charges.

The man reportedly left for Brazil after he paid a bribe and was released. However, he filed a complaint recently, with the claim of being kidnapped, according to sources in the area.

The complaint first surfaced more than a month ago, but a full investigation was not launched at the time since the man had not provided any statement. However, he reportedly recently returned to Guyana and filed an official complaint, triggering the current probe.

The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit is also conducting its own investigations into the involvement of its two ranks.
