An 11-year-old Central Rupununi boy died tragically on Thursday morning when he fell from a horse and was dragged for more than 500 metres after one of his feet got hooked in a section of a rope that was around the horse’s neck.

Police identified the dead boy as Cansius Constance of Hiowa Village, Central Rupununi.

A Police report said the young boy was riding the horse without a saddle but with a rope when he suddenly fell from the horse and got hooked in a section of the rope.

He was dragged along the roadway before eventually becoming loose. His sister rushed to help him, but it was too late. He was picked up and a doctor in the village pronounced him dead. The Police said several bruises were found on his back consistent with being dragged.

An investigation is ongoing.
