Government’s interventions to ease rise in cost-of-living should be appreciated -says VP Jagdeo

As Guyanese continue to complain about the rise in the cost of living and the toll it is having on their lives, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, believes they should be appreciative of the efforts of his Government in easing the impact of the cost of living crisis.

At his press conference on Thursday, Mr. Jagdeo sought to compare the cost of living situation in Guyana and in the US and the response of the two governments. He said in Guyana’s case, the interventions have been many and impactful and citizens should appreciate the efforts.

“If anything, looking at the (US) Republican Convention and what’s being said there, you should appreciate what this government has done in four years, especially with two years lost to COVID. The first two years lost to COVID and with all the inflationary pressures that are affecting a big economy like the United States of America, with a greater capacity to handle this, we in Guyana because of Government policy interventions , we have kept some of the most substantial areas in cost of living increases that other countries face, we have kept them away from our people”, the Vice President said.

Despite the interventions of the Government, citizens across the country continue to gripe about increases in food prices and other items. They have been calling on the Government to put more and better systems in place to ease the impact on their pockets and their lives.

Mr. Jagdeo said there are some increases that simply cannot be avoided.

“It’s true that food prices have moved up and we are working to ensure a greater supply response, because if people produce more, then the prices will come down. There are some things we can’t avoid. If you import and freight go up and the prices internationally go up. We can’t avoid that”, he said.

Mr. Jagdeo said under the current Government, more jobs have been created and more young people have been gaining access to lands to build their own homes. He said the Government will continue to make interventions that will ease the global rise in the cost of living and its impact here in Guyana.
