The Opposition APNU+AFC coalition has submitted a motion to the National Assembly calling on the government to make provisions for every Guyanese above the age of 18 to receive a cash grant of $200,000 to cushion the effects of the rising cost of living.

The motion which could come up for debate when Parliament reconvenes, wants the Government of Guyana to make provisions for every Guyanese above the age of 18-years-old to be paid a quarterly cash grant of $200,000 which will compensate for the increase in the cost of living”.

Further, the motion also acknowledges that Guyana and countries around the world, continue to experience a tremendous health and socio-economic impact from the Coronavirus 19 pandemic.

It explains that the Government only provided a one off $25,000 relief grant to citizens to cushion the cost of living effects more than a year ago, but the prices of food and other basic items have been rising steadily since that time.

In the motion, the Opposition contends that the Government has failed to devise strategies and implement policies that have proven effective in times of inflation.

The Government is being called upon to immediately craft strategies in addition to financial aid to help Guyanese deal with the high food prices.

The Guyana Government has acknowledged that due to external factors, the cost of basic food items have risen and could increase even more.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has stated that while the Government has no control over the cost of living issue, it will try its best to assist Guyanese.
