
A 31-year-old former Security Guard at the US Embassy in Georgetown has been arrested on a cyber crime investigation.
The man, Anand Persaud, from Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara was arrested by the Police over alleged threats directed to the US Embassy and Embassy personnel. The Police investigation was triggered by a formal complaint by the Embassy.
In a statement, the Police said the is accused of sending a threatening email to the Embassy’s email address.
According to the Police, the email which was sent last Thursday (July 25, 2024), contained threats directed towards United States Government personnel and the Embassy’s Georgetown facility.
Security officials of the US Embassy made a formal report of the threat at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters of the Police Force, and based on investigations by Police detectives with assistance from overseas law enforcement personnel, the 31-year-old suspect, was arrested by detectives at his Sisters Village home and escorted to CID Headquarters.
The Police said further investigations were conducted, and investigators were able to link the suspect to the email address that was used to send the threatening email to the Embassy.
The probe is ongoing.
