29-year-old woman murdered by reputed husband after leaving abusive relationship

The life of a 29-year-old woman from Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway was snatched away from her on Sunday after she was attacked and stabbed to death by her reputed husband.

Police investigators have identified the dead woman as Alexis Roxanne Harris. The incident took place at around 12:20 this afternoon in the village of Free and Easy on the West Bank of Demerara. The dead woman’s 35-year-old reputed husband, James Lord, is in Police custody.

A Police statement on the murder explained that the couple lived with their children at Hill Foot along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, but after Harris was abused by the reputed husband two months ago, she moved from their home with her children and took refuge at her sister’s home on the West Bank of Demerara. The woman had complained to relatives that the man had also repeatedly threatened to kill her.

While she was at her sister’s residence today, the reputed husband showed up to visit the children. At the time of the visit, the woman was reportedly on her phone and that angered the man, who according to the Police, snatched the phone away from the woman and broke it.

The Police report further indicated that the woman stepped away from the man, but he was observed by his nephew reaching into his bag and taking out a knife and making an attempt to stab the woman.

The nephew intervened and was stabbed to the abdomen by the man as he attempted to wrestle the knife away from him. According to the Police statement, with the nephew falling to the ground, the man ran after the woman and stabbed her to the chest and one of her hands. She collapsed, as he ran from the area towards the sea dam.

The 29-year-old woman, Alexis Harris, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured nephew was rushed to the West Demerara Hospital, where he was admitted in a serious condition.

With the help of residents in the area, the Police were able to locate the suspect hiding out in the area with two self-inflicted stab wounds to his abdomen. He was also rushed to the West Demerara Hospital, where he is now a patient in critical condition under Police guard.

The matter remains under investigation.
